So apparently our Uglies thread got deleted...

today on Mythbusters they built hovercraft. They intended them to be homemade levitation device, but they were most definitely hovercraft.

One of them was even technically a hoverboard since it was built out of a surfboard. I thought that was pretty saweet.

Oh, freak that is so awesome!
I want a hoverboard now.

You could always go really really fast on a bumpy-ish road on a skateboard, then when the road veers up, you would leave the ground for a fraction of a second. Then, for one second of your life, you could be hoverboarding.

It isn't as awesome as it sounds though. Hahaha

I'm reading Uglies again. This has been long coming. xD I find myself forgetting so many things about the series and I've probably thought, "I need to read Uglies again" about 5 times in the past week.

So I am. Yay.

I'm writing a speech on book banning, and I e-mailed Scott and Maureen Johnson, just on the off-chance that they would have time to respond.

I get an e-mail from Scott saying he doesn't have time for specifics, but here are a few good blogs.
And the e-mail right after that is my contemporary literature professor asking me if she can borrow Uglies. It was odd but awesome at the same time.

I bought another copy of Uglies
life is good ^-^

and this made me happy
I knew Scott was talking about it, but now he has what is going to be in it, the title, and a cover(?)
http://scottwesterfeld.com/blog/?p=482

either way I am REALLY excited
I mean think about it: we get basically the mapping out of the RTv2 world
it could inspire us to do more with what we have in the RP
Maps and gadgets and history, oh my! ^0^

Its gonna give RTv2 a whole new spin!

Well, we can hope. But mygosh it makes me so happy and excited and just.. SQUEE!

I also don't ever really order online. Sure I trust it.. But I just love buying books from actual bookstores. There's just something about it. All those books. All those freaking books. *bookgasm*

But I may have to preorder this, coz who knows how long it'll take before it gets to The Land of Oz.

Yikes.

my mom needed stuff to read this summer, so I gave her a giant stack (including the Uglies series, the first HP, My Sister's Keeper and Speak) and she totally got into Uglies. she gets why I love Scott so much now.

anyways, we were up at my aunt's cabin with a bunch of my family, and as usual my mom brings up her future as of yet unborn grandchildren. she does this a lot. it kind of creeps me out. and then as usual we start talking baby names - I always say that I want to name my kids after literary characters or someone special so that they can ask why they have their name and I can literally show them the reason. (this is because my name means nothing at all to anyone) and my mom just goes:

"You can name one Tally. I'd be okay with that."

I couldn't believe it. I mean she's gotten really into books with me before, but never to the point where she would say anything like THAT. it was humorous.

Hahaha, Tally would be an awesome baby name. The fact that your mother brought it up is even more amusing. (Even though I'd get way too freaked out if anyone tried to have "future grandchildren" talks with me, heh.)

Just Suz, thanks.

I Pretties was my favorite out of the trilogy. I much preferred pretty Tally over special Tally, and further on in the book probably more than Ugly Tally.

OK, Suz.

I really liked Tally as a Pretty, but better as a Special. Ugly Tally kind of bugged me.

Through all of Uglies, I kind of wanted Tally to become pretty. It really bugged me that she had to be ugly for most of the book.

Wasn't she an Ugly for all of the book?

I feel that Uglies was my favorite. It was the real and true Tally, in other books she had brain modifications and it just wasn't her.

At the VERY end, she went to become pretty, so I guess you're right, but . . . I dunno. Whatever.

Also, I like Tally better when she's been operated on. She's more interesting, and It's very fool that she can still think for herself.

I loved Tally as an Ugly
Honestly I hated the two sequels because she wasn't herself
I hate that Shay wasn't the one that could think herself though
She was the one that introduced Tally to everything
But she ends up being the antagonist

Either way I hated Pretties soooo much
It was just like getting into the head of the most popular kid at school and reading about their dream-world full of drinking, partying, and 'dreamy' boyfriends (when in my opinion David was far far better)

No me gusta

Specials was kind of BA though, I loved the science fiction part of it
And the "Hello Ping-la" part was epic ^-^

No I mean I wish that the power Tally had to overcome all the operations was instead given to Shay
I think that Shay deserved it more personally

Shay did overcome the pretties operation though... and she rewired herself as well - didn't she? Tally's the one who lost out in the end anyway. Shay got the better ending.

I dont think so
Throughout the end of Pretties Shay was still a bubblehead and as a Special she was always on Cable's side

If I am remembering this correctly @.@

I haven't read the books in a while, but this is what I remember:

Shay rewired herself through cutting.

Tally rewired herself with her mind.

To me, this makes Tally's rewiring more permanent and real while Shay's was more like a temporary high; she had to continuously cut herself in order to free her mind, so I can see how Shay fans are upset.

By the end of the series, it seems like Shay gets the better ending because she gets despecialized and Tally does not. However, like the previous operations, it wasn't Shay's choice, but it was Tally's choice to remain "special" in the head. Ever since the beginning, when Cable forced Tally to go to the Smoke, Tally's been jerked around, her fate in other people's hands; this choice has finally made her fate hers again. She's changed, but she still wouldn't be the same Tally from Uglies even if she was despecialized because of everything she's gone through. Tally got the best possible ending for her storyline; whether or not it's better than Shay's is debatable, but I think it is.

Shay overcame the Pretties operation in a different way. Hers was more... obsessive. I'm not quite sure exactly how to word it. I mean, she cut herself to get back to reality. She created a cult. She got wooed by power and the thought of revenge against Tally. To Shay, Tally just left her. Went off with some pretty new boyfriend that she fancied first, leaving her cold.

Shay was at least smart enough to cotton on to how to rewire herself, but the more crude harmful way. I agree with Meg, though. I would have loved it if Shay had been up there with Zane; if Shay was the one that fought off the operation through pure brainpower / willpower as opposed to pain through cutting.

Still, Scott did it for a reason. In the end, I was kind of angry that Shay was no longer Special. I mean, all along Shay got so shunted and, as Meg said, always made out to be the antagonist. I'm not saying that she wasn't. To the readers and Tally and everyone, Shay was the baddy. She had anger and hurt as a motive, and the Special operation intensified those emotions to the point of brainwashing.

I think what Shay got left with, in the ending and in Extras.. I mean, it was pretty crap when you look back at her life. Tally got the more cool, fun, harsher, edgier ending. Hehe.. I woulda loved to see Shay as Jungle Queen. *snorts with laughter: images of she-Tarzan floating through head with Shay's face*

I hated the way Tally treated Shay in Extras as well. So cold and distant, like it was all Shay's fault. Sure, in Uglies Shay got Tally caught up in the Smoke business... But Tally befriended Shay. Shay never forced her. It just happened that Shay took a risk and wanted her friend with her, thus leaving the note. In the end, it was all for the better though. The "greater good", I guess. With the mind-rain and Tally-idolising and all. I guess it was the perfect ending. Shay was shunted throughout the entire series, Tally more accidentally than anything taking all the fame glory... Why change the routine Scott had set up, hey?

Hehe, sorry. I angst about Shay's unfair-ness. Sorry for the rantness!

I think Shay actually got a better ending, if you count their degree of happiness in Extras. Sure, Tally was more interesting, and she got to be all kissy happy at the END, but looking back on the Zane incident, I don't think she'll EVER be perfectly happy.

Shay, on the other hand, was in a better mood through all of Extras, and I think you can translate that into the rest of her life. In Pretties, Shay was the less happy one, but now she has what she's always wanted [other than David]; freedom from the operation. Or ANY operation: She's just Shay now. And I think THAT makes her happy.

I think the relationship Tally and Shay had at the end of Extras was just .. I don't really know how to explain what I think, but it's like they're just trying to be acquaintances or co-workers, even though they have gone from best friends to best enemies and everything inbetween. It's probably best for both of them if Tally stays distant, so they can't be so harshly broken apart again.
Plus, I don't think Tally and Shay had seen each other in a while in Extras, if Tally and David were off in the woods while Shay stayed in Diego doing stuff. Maybe that's why their friendship seemed a little off, if it even existed.

Shay did get the short end of the stick in pretty much everything that happened in the series, and then got blamed for everything that happened to Tally. I guess in some ways she brought it on herself, leaving a note for Tally to find her, and believing that she and David had "something" when she went to the Smoke. But then after that she always gets what she wants (to be pretty, to be special, etc) but then she always gets outshined by Tally, who ends up as the hero of the world and everything. I do like that Shay seems happy in the end, and she is up there with Tally in the history books as a saver of the world.

Uglies by far was my favorite book. I loved that Tally was herself, with no weirdo modifications. Plus Tally and David were soooo meant to be together, so it's the best book :] I did like Specials, but it was strange to have the POV reversed from Uglies, where Tally is now the one with super strength chasing Smokies, instead of being the one running away. Pretties to me was cute, and I liked seeing the bubblehead world (which was so freaking cool), but boring. And Extras was just not the same.

yea i agree Shocked
i think its better that shay and tally arent friends anymore (as much as i want them to be...) i think theyve had waaaay too much drama between them.

yea i feel bad for shay! Sad even though she was the one that dragged tally into being pretty and special, she never really had what she wanted. tally got david AND zane (for a while). the only good part of extras was how shay got to be shay Very Happy

I guess so, but Shay never really wanted Zane [I don't know why the hell not, but she didn't], and like you saud, she IS the one who dragged Tally into most of it.

I am not sure wether I should be really impressed or really freaked out

I love the fantastical quality of it, the entertainment part of it all
But how the computer knows so much - and how we are vocally commanding it like a slave or another human being...it's just so weird
I guess with a remote its more like we are using a tool
Where here the lines between tool and robotic 'being' (if you will) are kind of blurred

Just seems like a precursor to a lot of bad juju Sad
But fun at the same time ^o^

What do you think?
