We're book people, I think we can make this work.
The other day I was mentally ranking my favorite book characters - who I liked more than others or who I just thought was important enough to rank highly on my list.
So now I invite you all to make your own lists in any format you choose.
I choose to make two lists, divided by gender.
Also...for now lets just stick to book characters, haha. we can make lists of our favorite RPG characters somewhere else! haha

Females:
10. Gemma Doyle - A Great and Terrible Beauty (she's pretty fierce)
9. Alanna - The Lionness Quartet by Tamora Pierce
8. Bella Swan (*hides from Izzy*)
7. Lucy Pevensie (she's always innocent and always does the right thing)
6. Nancy Drew (duh!)
5. Jane Jarvis - Devilish by Maureen Johnson
4. Jane Drew - The Dark is Rising series
3. Max Ride
2. Tally
1. Lyra Belacqua - His Dark Materials

Males:
10. Michael Corleone (The Godfather. I've never seen the movie but I love the book)
9. David (you know the one...)
8. Hunter Braque (So Yesterday)
7. Edward Cullen
6. Jacob Black
5. Will Parry (His Dark Materials)
4. Spencer Martin (Suite Scarlett - Maureen Johnson)
3. Mr. Bingley (P&P)
2. Theodore Laurence (Little Women)
1. Michael Moscovitz (Princess Diaries)

My guy list was originally a lot smaller. The girl one was easy.

Okay, your turns!!!!

Ash, how dare you make me waste time ranking characters! haha

For some reason, this was a lot harder than all the times I've ranked my own book characters in my head. Maybe it's because I feel like I can judge them better than a stranger's charries, knowing every single detail about them possible? heh

Anyway...

Females:
10. Belle (Tips on Having a (Gay) Ex Boyfriend)
9. Sudi (Sisters of Isis)
8. Em (Airhead)
7. Misty (Unleashed)
6. Tianna (Daughters of the Moon)
5. Toby (The Squad)
4. Kate (Circle of Three)
3. Suze (The Mediator)
2. Catty (Daughters of the Moon)
1. Vanessa (Daughters of the Moon)

Males:
10. Father Matt (The Unseen Quartet)
9. Ed (Fearless)
8. Hunter (So Yesterday)
7. Ben (Kitty and the Midnight Hour)
6. Raven (Snow)
5. Christopher (Shattered Mirror)
4. Rex (The Midnighters)
3. Stanton (Daughters of the Moon)
2. Collin (Daughters of the Moon)
1. Kyle (Daughters of the Moon/Sons of the Dark)

*obviously has a book series bias*

I keep changing the order these charries are in...or who the charries that make the list even are. *likes too many charries*

And I seem to be the odd one out, because I thought the guy list was easier than the girl one. Go figure.

Okay. So, yeah, this was majorly difficult. Mainly because I have memory issues, so I can't even remember half the books I've read. Haha, oops!
I liked your idea of male/female, Ash, so I went with that as well.

The order isn't really set... I kind of just put some where I wanted and others just fell in other places and.. In short, this isn't the final order I would publish or anything like that. Just a rough idea.

Female:
Shay (Uglies)
Lindsay Boxer (The Women’s Murder Club Series)
Anna (My Sister’s Keeper)
Carline (The Riftwar Saga)
Alaska (Looking For Alaska)
Nenita (Banana Heart Summer)
Hazel Green (Hazel Green) [through all of primary school, all I wanted was to be like Hazel Green.. *sigh*]
Tally (Uglies)
Max (Maximum Ride)
Lyra (His Dark Materials)

Male:
Raven (Snow)
Pug (Riftwar Saga)
Arutha (Riftwar Saga)
Jimmy the Hand (Riftwar Saga)
Pi Patel (Life of Pi)
Algernon (The Importance of Being Earnest)
Louis (Interview With the Vampire)
Hunter (So Yesterday)
Atreyu (The Neverending Story)
Remus Lupin (Harry Potter)

I only restrained myself to one Harry Potter character!! I feel proud. Hehe.
And apologies for the Riftwar dominating, but those characters are freaking awesome. At first basically the entire male list was just characters from Magician etc. But I restrained!

Gosh, this was hard. The decisions were really tough and I was basically doing them for the first time. I've never tried ranking different charcters based on how much I like them - they're all too different and I have different varieties of "liking". hehe. But I formed a list, and then started filling in spots backwards... which led to interesting results.

I guess I should just say that the number one spot is not occupied by the character I would most likely claim to be my favourite. When I was working backwards, I essentially left my most preferred characters to last... and now the #1 positions are quite different to what I'd have imagined.

Females:
10. Josie – Fire Dancer (she's so strong and determined - her story left me brooding for days)
9. Elizabeth Clarry – Feeling Sorry for Celia by Jaclyn Moriarty (I just really like her)
8. Alaska Young – Looking for Alaska
7. Melinda Sordino - Speak
6. Max – Maximum Ride (kick. ass.)
5. Leslie Burke – Bridge to Terabithia (this is the first book I can remember that made me cry like a baby - and she was so amazing)
4. Audrey Porter – Good Girls by Laura Ruby (a unique choice even for me - I can't quite pinpoint exactly what makes her such a good character; it's a combination of things)
3. Lyra Belacqua – His Dark Materials
2. Tally Youngblood - Uglies
1. Elizabeth Bennet – Pride & Prejudice (that famous wit)

Males:
10. Nicholas Prescott – Harvesting the Heart (I wouldn't be able to tell you exactly why, but I'm trusting my gut instinct, even if he's stubborn and unforgiving)
9. Cal Thompson - Peeps
8. Dexter Jones – This Lullaby (again: he sticks with you)
7. Hunter Braque – So Yesterday
6. Fred and George – Harry Potter (they're basically one entity, right? haha. if had to choose, I'd go Fred)
5. Frederick Wentworth - Persuasion (*sigh* it's the letter)
4. Mr. Darcy – Pride & Prejudice (*swoon*)
3. Theodore Laurence - Little Women (I swear, I don't know why I didn't put him on here sooner)
2. Pagan Kidrouk – The Pagan Chronicles (a surprise, but it's the charm and wit that gets you)
1. Will Parry - His Dark Materials (oh, thank god, the world is right again. it's like how they say you should always be with a person who makes you want to be a better person. only, it's with a list)

Note: The male list does not take into account my propensity for falling hopelessly in love with Lukes. I seriously think my brain is dysfunctional when it comes to Lukes, so I won't trust myself to put them on the list. Just a note.

So there you go. Undoubtedly, the male list was harder to compile than the female. But then there was the near impossible task of ranking the females, which was slightly harder than the male list.

I would have liked to put Bella (she's practically redefined female protagonists) and Daisy (from How I Live Now - for her voice) in there as well, but ultimately, they fell short of the rest. Although, in a way they didn't. It's just that it's impossible to compare characters from such different books and pick a "better" one.

I'm having a go at BOTH lists now... Hmm.

Females:

10. Parvana - Parvana / The Breadwinner
9. Matilda - Matilda
8. Maximum Ride - Maximum Ride
7. Stephanie Plum – One For The Money
6. Pelly D. - The Diary of Pelly D.
5. Lyra Belacqua - His Dark Materials
4. Leslie Burke - Bridge to Terabithia
3. Kate Forrester - After The First Death
2. Tally Youngblood - Uglies
1. Ellie Linton - Tomorrow, When The War Began

Wish I could have gone up to 20 or something, there are SO many other ones I want to put on that - plus the ones I've probably forgotten. Now I'm going to do the male one...

Heather, I think it's so funny that you have Christopher on your list because I was just re-reading Demon In My View the other day, and I found your writing and A A-R's reminded me of each other.

Lil, you stole my top three! haha. jk.

I really feel like I need to read some of these now.
I can't believe I didn't put any HP characters on my list!!!! I'm a failure!

hahaha, shame on you, Ash. shaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaame.
No, not really. hehehe

I just realised that I wrote the name of the author for one of my characters instead of the name of the book. hehe. *goes back to edit*
And I also realised that somehow James Morland trumps Edmund Bertram. In my mind. When I'm trying to remember all my favourite characters.
What?!?! *goes back to edit* One day I'll apologise to James. hehehe

I'm really interested in a lot of the books here that I haven't read (which are less in number than the ones I have, thank god. otherwise I'd be tempted to read them all, and my to-read list would grow even further).

And actually, I think I've already read Banana Heart Summer because Lil recommended it to me. hehe.

How has Bella redefined female protagonist? Max Remy was pulling off the stumbling, tripping and falling-all-over the place trick years before Bella did, and did it better. But, I don't think it's that what you're referring to when you say she's redefined female protagonist...

I agree with Daisy though - she was brittle, but good. I didn't like the book she was in, but as a character she was quite good.

And I really want to read the series that the majority of Heather's characters are from.

EDIT: I had to change my number 10th to Parvana. I forgot all about that character - really loved her. It's so hard to do my male list, I know I've read great male protagonists/antagonists, I just can't remember them...

Hahaha Ash, I'm so sorry! Well, not really sorry.. As I agree with you. Just.. Hehe I kinda didn't realise that. Well, they aren't my top three, anyway. I did mine round the other way. I just realised that now. My number one is Shay. Not that she is my number one, but those three/four kinda swap around a lot.

Oh and.. Argh, I can't!! I want to put Quick in there from Tim Winton's Cloudstreet, but.. He doesn't fit!! Neither do Fred and George. I had to rid of them as they just didn't cut it! And I think Lupin is a better character, for some reason. Who knows why.. haha.

Yes. The to-read list has just gotten longer.. Wait 'til the to-read pile hears about this.

Yay! Go Banana Heart Summer! .. such a pretty cover... *doesn't judge books by their covers^*

Hmm.. Thinking about it in an actual REAL order, Lindsay Boxer would probably be my number one female. Male would probably be either Jimmy or Hunter. I can't choose! Eek. Either way, Lindsay is the ... bomb. Seriously, there is no other word to describe her. Anyone else read the Women's Murder Club series and can relate?

^ much.

I debated about putting Edmund on my list, because I really do love him, and he is so noble - but he was duped into almost marrying an evil woman so that made him go down in points...haha he's my number 11 I guess

-- I was just about to write this whole thing there about him, but I think I should make sure first; which Edmund do you mean? Narnia Edmund?

But the fact that he made a mistake should put him up there on your list! When characters make mistakes, they go higher in my books. It makes them seem more real. For me, anyway. Unless its a really stupid mistake that just pisses me off. Then I yell at them and refuse to read on for about five minutes.

Cha, I know... I show them, right?

nooo Edmund Bertram is from Mansfield Park...a Jane Austen book.
Sure he made a mistake and that makes him real, but Fanny was always in love with him - she was his best friend and closest companion and he was shallow and swayed by the pretty face of Mary Crawford and even manipulated by her insufferable brother. I just don't think he was using his brain or his heart to make the decision...he knew he loved Fanny and didn't pursue it, at least not enough. take that Edmund! haha.

@ Izzy - What I'm referring to with Bella is that she's one of the first widely recognised ordinary female protagonists in modern YA fiction. I know that there have been others, but they all have a different feel to Twilight, which has become epic in its own right. The thing with Bella is that she doesn't have a mysterious past, her mother/father isn't dead and she isn't struggling to cope with this, she doesn't have red hair (which isn't as original as people think), she doesn't have a quirky "goth" friend, she isn't oblivious to the fact that one of her male friends likes her, etc etc.

Of course, there's always plenty of excellent novels which do make use of one or more of those things, and I LOVE so many of these books... but there are also many books which overdo it. Bella, in comparison, is normal. But she still has an interesting story. I guess I just like that there an be smart, mature heroines in widely popular books.
But again: there are many books and genres in which being different is a good thing, if not necessary. I have nothing against these.

I remember reading the first two books in the Parvana series. They were quite good. There's also a novel by a different author called "Walk Into My Heart"... or something. I have no idea what it's called, haha. But it was about a girl in a similar situation, only she was a refugee in Australia. It wasn't as good as the Parvana books. hehe.

And Lil, I think you're deliberately trying to confuse us by having the list the other way around. IS THE SHAME OF THIS HEAPING ON YOUR SHOULDERS YET? It should be. Both you and Ash are shameful. Shameful beyond belief.
I think I'm getting a little too shame-happy here. wheeeeeeee
In my mind, Fred and George are just... so likeable. You can't help but love their characters. But I also know that so many people love Remus Lupin, more than I could ever imagine. It's odd. I suspect it's kind of like the Alan Rickman thing. I've never been able to sigh and squee over him like other people do... it just doesn't happen and I don't mind at all.

On a few other notes:
- I loved the cover of Banana Heart Summer as well. hehe.
- Never read Lindsay Boxer. I can't stand James Patterson's older books, but I think I might give the Women's Murder Club series a go. My mum seems to like them and she recommended them to me, anyway.

As for Edmund, I feel I have to defend him in a few rights. Sure, he's swayed by Mary Crawford, who's charming and pretty, while Fanny is kind and very close to him. But Edmund is ultimately good, kind, loyal, decent, sensitive and he appreciates people for the small things. He is the only person in his family who treats Fanny kindly and with consideration. Mary Crawford was the one exception, and there are many reasons for this. He was infatuated and attracted to her, and a courtship developed between them. You can't blame a man for believing he's in love.

I don't think that Mary was an "evil" character. She was wordly, foolish and unkind to Edmund due to his becoming a clergyman, but she was exactly that: a materialistic woman who did try to do what she felt was right on several occasions. The only reason it took him so long to realise and fully accept what Mary was truly like was because he kept putting her words and behaviour down to playfulness, and seeing it in good humour. But think of it this way: Edmund pursues this occupation, despite Mary Crawford's strong jibes and challenges regarding this. He's devoted to it. Had Henry not gone after Maria, and the subsequent events involving Mary blaming this on Fanny not happened, Edmund and Mary would have married and led a happy life together. Jane Austen made a point of this towards the end of the novel.

Still, he did realise his feeling for Fanny, didn't he? hehehe. And he's such a good person. I like that he can remain devoted to becoming a clergyman, yet he never comes across as preachy at any stage in the novel. He has his faults... or fault, rather... but in the end, Edmund is Edmund. And that's enough.

For me. hehehe

Laurie!!! Ohhh he was so close on the list! So close! But he just missed out, like Fred, George, Quick and just.. so many others. (I'm speaking of Laurie aka Theodore Laurence from Little Women here, in reference to Ash's list.)

And NO! I feel NO shame, Ammy. NO SHAME! Don't make me conform to your silly countDOWN ways! I countUP!

... Yes, I realise that makes little to no sense.

BUT YOU DON'T LIVE IN MY BRAIN. That makes perfect sense to my brain. So *sticks out tongue* to you!

Well, I find I can only read one Women's Murder Club, then I have to read a few books in between to get a break from it. They aren't particularly challenging or anything. They are really easy reads, I find. You finish them so quickly! Sometimes, though, I think they go on for a bit too long. I mean, everything in the story has to happen, but it just takes so long sometimes! I think you should read the first, at least. And if you enjoy that, the second. So far my favourite has definately been the third. Because, yes, somebody dies.

.... Maybe I am a bit too morbid.. Heh.

And, uh. Alan Rickman? Yeh, NAH.

That is just weird, my friends.

W.
E.
I.
R.
D.

He's so slimy!

I remember after reading the sixth book when he kills Dumbledore.. That was hilarious. My friends and I are pretty big Potter-fans, so we had it finished by the Sunday. On Sunday we had got together to watch some movies.. And.. I don't remember which movie it was. Was Love Actually out by then? Well, anyway, we watched some non-Potter related movie and one of my friends yells out as soon as Rickman steps on screen
"YOU EVIL SLIME-BAG! YOU KILLED DUMBLEDORE!"

Then there was silence for a few moments. And we all burst out laughing. It was just so funny. I guess it was a had-to-be-there moment.. Alas. (earwax)

So many people love Remus! Its amazing. At first, at least for me, I found that not many people liked him that much (in the third). I mean, nobody hated him. Well, one or two. But I dealt with them. I think he must have just grown on people. Then especially in later books... And then.. oh GOD the seventh!

... *runs off into Potter-corner and cries*

I understand completey what you are saying about Bella, as well. She's just.. average. Not saying she is crap, just.. normal. Yeh well, it was all articulated in Ammy's post. Heh.

My Top Characters list kept bothering me. I realized it was partly because I separated them by gender and that some of the characters I've only read in the past year, so how can I know they're "top" yet? So here's my new list, made at a saner hour than 2 AM:

10. Hunter (So Yesterday)
9. Raven (Snow)
8. Christopher (Shattered Mirror)
7. Suze (The Mediator)
6. Stanton (Daughters of the Moon)
5. Collin (Daughters of the Moon)
4. Kyle (Daughters of the Moon/Sons of the Dark)
3. Kate (Circle of Three)
2. Catty (Daughters of the Moon)
1. Vanessa (Daughters of the Moon)

I still don't like my list, because it's so hard to choose favorites, but I think it's better. I really didn't mean for my list to have DOTM domination again, but I couldn't help it! I'd list all the characters from that series if I could, simply because they feel so real to me. But maybe that's because I read that series a million times every year, so of course they're going to stick out more to me than other charries. Heh.

And I feel lame because I haven't read most of the books you guys listed your faves from. *looks for library card*

How would we do that though? Would we just have one list of the top 10 characters from all three RPGs? Or three for each one? Or two for each one - female and male - making six altogether?

I was just cleaning out computer files when I came across this photoshopped image that I made sometime last year. I'm just mentioning this here because... well, Banana Heart Summer was talked about on this thread.

The image is something I made when I was really bored. I had this really pretty photo of midnight, and I wanted to make something with it. Plus, I had this really gorgeous photo of a rose, almost wilting, but still very beautiful.

Point is! The text! Okay. So I photoshopped the main images together, whatever, and then there's a quote in the middle. As I opened the file just now, I wondered for a moment where the quote was from. And then BAM! A second later, I just knew.
"Close to midnight, when the heart bows from the stem, wait for its first dew. It will drop like a gem. Catch it with your tongue. When you hold the heart of the matter, you'll never grow lonely again."

I was struck by how perfect the quote is for the actual image, and then I had this weird moment of reflection. Then I came here to tell you guys. heh. Okay, I'm off.

Okay, now I feel stupid. Immensely stupid.

I deleted it. I was deleting all unnecessary files and compressing system folders to make space on my hard drive. And a manip of a rose, however pretty it is, doesn't make that cut. Even if the quote is awe-inspiring.

You might be thinking, "Well just restore it from the recycling bin!"
But I emptied the recycle bin. Because... that's just what I do. I get OCD and empty the recycle bin when there's lots of things in there. Plus, even the files there use up space.

So out of this whole experience, I gained 9GB hard drive, a one-time glance at a pretty manip, and embarrassment. hahaha.
(Also, has anyone else noticed Meg and Ash's posts are out of whack?)

Edit: AHHH SA IS DOING THAT POST-SWITCHING THING AGAIN.

Why? She got a happy ending. Ivan's ending on the other hand, was horrible!

But did she? She chose to go back, she bore a child, and it was so painful for her to be separated from whats-his-name. Ivan chose to stay because he really wanted to.

I just know that Josie's story impacted me more than Ivan's, although they were both very powerful. I didn't say anything about how it ends... just their individual journeys.

Awww, Ammy that sounded wonderful! And you deleted it. Sigh.
Hehe.

Amazing how well that quote fits, though. I mean, obviously you chose it to fit but.. Wow.

Oh, and SA being all mean and switching RPG posts? Yeh, I'll make The Bagel bring out the forbidden Spatula of Doom!

.. I don't know how long its been forbidden for, but goddamn it makes it seem waaaayyy more menacing.

My list was just entirely decimated. I'm reading Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist, and that's one and two right there.

What's Chinese Cinderella about? I think someone just mentioned a book with a name something like that to me?

It's an autobiography. This is what it's about:

---

I returned with my prize settled in its very own cup. First time in two years! Finally an egg after 730 eggless mornings! Carefully, I examined its surface. The number 37 was plainly visible, painted in black ink on the smooth, brownish shell. I thought, Who is it from? Do I have a secret admirer? Dare I eat it? Is it really mine to be consumed at will?

I imagined tapping my egg with the back of my spoon, cracking its top, delicately peeling off the broken bits of shell and digging into its white membranous surface. Oh, what bliss to taste that wonderful rich yolk on my tongue and let it slide deliciously down my throat! So very, very tempting! I longed for it. Yet I knew very well it was not mine. It was a mistake. Perhaps a trick or a cruel practical joke.

What if the rightful owner came up while I was in the middle of enjoying my egg and claimed it? What should I do then? Once I broke the shell, there was no going back.

I steeled myself and got up from the table. Mother Mary had just handed out the last egg and was about to leave with her empty vat. I approached her hesitantly, feeling confused and defensive, and handed back the egg.
"Mother Mary! This is not mine."
Impatiently, she dropped the vat and scrutinised my egg with a sigh. "It says 37. What is your number? Are you Number 37?"
"Yes, Mother!"
"Then the egg is yours."
"No, it can't be!"
"Why not? Why can't it be?"

Everyone had stopped eating and was listening intently. There was not a sound. This is terrible! I thought. I'm drawing attention to myself and broadcasting my state of perpetual egglessness. What can I say that's logical and convincing and still preserve a bit of dignity?

-Excerpt from Chinese Cinderella by Adeline Yen Mah

---

hahahahahahahahaha, no, okay, it's about more than eating an egg after 730 eggless mornings...

Adeline: *sits at table, writing in journal* Dear diary. Another long, fretful say has gone by, and still no egg. I am ready to kill myself, just for the experience of tasting that wonderful rich yolk sliding down my throat. Oh, what bliss!

hahahahaha, let me recover. Okay. *recovers*
Let's just say that since I read this book a few years back, the various egg scenes have been ridiculed to the point of no return by my friends and I. In one scene, Adeline's brother goes crazy and makes a 16 egg omelette. The whole family has an egg fetish.

That excerpt I posted above.... I've had it for years in a word document titled as "READ WHEN YOU'RE SAD". Because there's nothing like a good story about digging into an egg's white membranous surface to cheer you up. Sadly, I've never opened the file during a situation like that, but whenever I forget about the book, I chance upon this document and go, "What kind of a title is that? "read when you're sad"? I wonder what it is..." Then I read it and remember.

Anyway, there's just SO much wrong with that excerpt that I don't even know where to begin. To this day, I still randomly quote it to my friends. And actually, one of my favourite birthday presents ever was a gift a close friend gave to me. It was a fake egg with the number 37 written on it in black ink. I think I may have laughed till I cried when I got it. Ahh, good times. hehe.

I shouldn't be mocking Chinese Cinderella! Adeline did have a tough time, and I appreciate it... but when you write something like this, it's not going to go past me. PERCHED IN ITS VERY OWN CUP!
...hahahahaha. Alright, I'm off to "broadcast my state of perpetual egglessness" (that is probably my FAVOURITE part of the entire scene.) What can I say that's logical and convincing and still preserve a bit of dignity? (after this scene, there's no dignity left to preserve)

I loved the book Chinese Cinderella!
I can not pick favorite characters, because I tend to forget about books that I've read and things like that. I'm trying to make this list by memory, and by looking at my bookshelves, and failing. I'm sure there are other characters I love but am forgetting ... Anyway here is a random, incomplete list of my favorite characters (in no order):

Females

Tally Youngblood - Uglies
Dinnie - Bloomability
Laura Ingalls Wilder - Little House Books (and what's cooler is that she was real) [edit-ignore my ignorance of what a fictional character is ...]
Taryn - Welcome to the Ark
Dess - Midnighters
Melissa - Midnighters
Julie - Julie of the Wolves
Pearl - The Last Days
Alice - Twilight

Males
David - Uglies
Jacob Black - Twilight
Zahler - The Last Days
Sirius Black - Harry Potter
Luke Garner - Shadow Children series

I was just thinking about the His Dark Materials trilogy today, and it kind of led to this. I couldn't quite remember who had been on my male list, and so when I checked, I realised something horrible which I will never ever forgive myself for. It's terrible and I can't believe I missed him, because he should be the most obvious character to be on my list.

I MISSED WILL PARRY. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.

I'm horrified. How is this possible when he was my most favourite character from the trilogy? Ahhhhhhh, panic. I mean, I put Lyra on the female list, but not Will, who I absolutely adore. He has got to be one of the best fictional characters EVER.

So I'm glad I noticed this in due time. He's now being put onto my list at 1st (how shameful is it that I forgot my favourite character?). Which is good. Yay.
